While Barbie’s inventor believed that little girls just wanted to be big girls, Hope knew that among the numerous women who kept their Barbies long into their adulthood, the big girls really wanted to retain a little bit of their childhood too.

Then one day Hope read about a photographer who had created a series of photographs of Nigerian wedding customs. The man and his wife had used Barbie dolls as their models. They scoured the internet for months looking for everything for the photo shoot. From doll furniture to fabrics for the clothes to items for the scenery and even the Barbie doll models, all had been carefully acquired for the photo shoot.

The resulting collection of photos depicted scenes from a Nigerian wedding, which was indeed a complicated affair. There were many detailed, elaborate scenes of the families meeting and greeting, meals being shared, and even of the groom and his family laying on the ground before the bride’s parents as part of their tradition.

Soon after reading about it on Facebook, Hope was inspired to get out her own Barbie Doll collection. She envisioned creating a similar project, except not the Nigerian wedding. Hers would be a timeline sort of project with scenes from the decades when her Barbie Dolls were manufactured. While the Nigerian wedding was a single project, hers would be on a much bigger scale covering several decades along with a variety of scenes from each.

As is usually the case with such a large project, Hope was soon trying to figure out how and where she would create, store and setup her photography projects. This is precisely the situation where a Sherman Pole Building would come in handy. A Sherman Pole Building could fill all of Hope’s requirements and soon she too could be posting her photography projects on Facebook.

The Way to Build a Boat

It was on a trip to England that Grayson became interested in something called “punting.” Back home in Minnesota, his friends had a great time laughing at the idea of a punt being something that doesn’t relate to football. In England he had learned that a punt was a boat. Specifically, it is a small flat-bottomed boat with neither a bow nor a stern and without a keel, an oar or a motor. Technically it did have a back and a front but one was not distinguishable from the other.

The punt as a concept was difficult for most people. Could you call it a boat if it didn’t have the critical components of other boats? And how do you ever move it along if there is no motor and no oar? Grayson’s friends joked that a punt must be the type of boat that is powered by a swimmer or several swimmers pushing it along. Others suggested that a punt must be a boat that you kick, which was a completely ridiculous idea but the boys had fun with it none the less.

In reality the punt is pushed along shallow waterways with a pole. In England punting is a popular leisure activity that is mainly done on shallow rivers. Grayson had first learned of the concept on a visit to Shakespeare’s home at Stratford-on-Avon. Grayson had a tendency to think outside the box anyway and as such was fascinated with the idea of these punts that had been around since the 1860s. He was even more impressed to learn that college students at Cambridge participated in punting and that there is the Cambridge University Punting Society.

It wasn’t long before Grayson had convinced his best friends that maybe they would all like to build a punt or two for themselves. Grayson’s dad being a practical type suggested that they might instead wish to build a sailboat. Why a sailboat? Well, because it was something you could actually use. And there as they checked into the possibilities for building a sailboat was the suggestion that a good boat design for a beginner would be, “The Elegant Punt.”

As Grayson’s mother wisely pointed out, the first step to building a sailboat or a punt, elegant or shabby, was to acquire the space that would be an appropriate storage facility and also a weatherproof place to build it. All of this meant they had to start with a call to Sherman Pole Buildings.

A Place to Party On

Everybody knows that it takes a village to accomplish just about anything. This was Lea’s thought one evening at her Book Club meeting. The Book Club had become Lea’s village, which is why she wanted to bring her latest discovery to the book club members. While visiting relatives, Lea had happened on to the latest fitness craze – Zumba. Everyone was talking about this new way to workout because it wasn’t just a workout, it was a party. Given a choice between attending a party and working out, most people would not choose to workout.

Well, there was Sylvia who could still fit in to her high school prom dress. And every so often she would wear it to a party just to prove her point. No one had the nerve to tell her that not everything that fits should be worn. Additionally, Sylvia’s gift for organization, time management and prioritization didn’t always go over very well, considering the chaos that takes over most people’s lives. Most of the members had trouble motivating themselves to drive to some place to workout on a circuit or a treadmill or some other piece of equipment. Even if they could find the time, boredom with the routine left fitness as a mostly unaccomplished chore.

But now there was Zumba, which was fitness plus partying. The Zumba organization likens it to Post-it notes that happened accidentally while someone was testing adhesive properties. Zumba came about when a fitness instructor in Columbia went to class without his prescribed music and instead improvised with his own music – on tapes in his backpack of all places. And soon enough history was in the making.

As Lea saw it, the problem with Zumba was that in order to create a party atmosphere you need a lot of people. But once you crowd too many people in your basement, there’s no room to move, and pretty soon everyone is sitting down with the chips and dips, never to move a muscle. This is how the ladies of the book club arrived at the thinking that Lea’s idea of a dedicated space for their Zumba party was absolutely brilliant. They already knew that the way to go for such a space would be a Sherman Pole Building that could be customized to suit their needs. It would have a dance floor, a high powered audio system that would pump the music from their iPod playlists and all in all, a good time would be in store for all.

Where the Boats go Home

From the earliest times when men and fish discovered each other, men have gone fishing. It is commonly held that this is the reason that women discovered shoe stores. Originally the fishing was easy, especially in the summer time. Men would hang about at water’s edge and physically wrestle with the fish. Obviously this method favored the more physically fit, brawny types, leaving a sour taste in the mouths of men who weren’t fit to be in the brawny category. Clearly, the sour taste is because they had resorted to eating lemons without any fish.

Soon enough the fish tired of being easy. They decided it was time to get more respect from men who had gotten careless and disrespectful around the easy fish. The chase was on. Necessity being known as the mother of invention, led the men to invent boats to chase the fish which had ventured farther and farther afield. Once they discovered the adrenaline of the chase, men were hooked and no longer cared for the idea of the easy fish – except in moments of desperation.

Boats leveled the playing field. Tall men and short men, lazy men and industrious men, fit men and fat men all could equally venture out upon the waters to fish to their hearts content. Any type of man could catch any type of fish in this equal opportunity environment. Even a woman or two was known to venture out into the world of fishing. Though men weren’t initially thrilled at this new development.

At first the boats were primitive rafts, lashed together with reeds and driftwood. Comfort, safety and durability were all compromised in this type of vessel. Plus, it was tough to hang on to your beer on a raft. In the ensuing series of innovations, the fishing boat would evolve in grandeur and scope to the point where men abandoned fishing altogether and just opted for the boat. Women loved the less primitive boat as well. Women are fans of anything less primitive.

With such advanced boats and the ensuing boat love, men and women were soon thinking of ways to protect their precious boats from the elements, some of which do not qualify as “elements” in the strictest sense of the word. All of which explains how important Sherman Pole Buildings has been to the world of boating. For several decades Sherman Pole Buildings have been in the thick of things, keeping boats and their owners safe from the elements.

A Revised History of Animal Shelters

By around 7000 BC, humans had already begun the process of domesticating sheep, goats, pigs and cattle, with chickens soon to follow. But turkeys, not till later. Ever since then, humans have been in the hunt for proper shelter for their newly domesticated friend or food as the case may have been. Along the way herders shared their shelter with the animals. All of this led to much conflict between herders and their wives who were tired of cleaning up after animals. This is how the word animal became a metaphor for men. It was most likely one of these wives who first called her husband a pig. And we aren’t ready to speculate on the circumstances that led to men being called dogs.

It is highly likely that a woman actually created the concept of a dedicated animal shelter because she was tired of the mess being created by both man and beast. She banished them both to the barn which at that time was the place where barley was stored. Clearly this was a most fortuitous occurrence as the man used the barley to make beer, a skill he had learned from his wife. Originally beer was brewed by women. Soon enough the wife realized he was having too much fun and not completing any chores. Women just hate that. So she ordered him back into the house and promptly handed him the “honey do” list.

Obviously, it was soon evident that this arrangement contained a major flaw. The animals, now alone in the barn, were eating the barley, which was irritating to both husband and wife as both beer and soup were compromised. And it is thought that while man could live without soup, beer is an entirely different issue. It had medicinal qualities, though this was merely a side effect of the true purpose of beer, which was to get men in the mood to dance. But we won’t go there.

What we will say is that Sherman Pole Buildings has evolved as the true friend of men, women, animals and beer. We have taken the real or imagined facts of history and created a wide range of choices for animals and the people who keep them. Our buildings separate man from animal and animal from barley and through it all we keep everyone warm and comfortable – and we’re ready to provide space for the brewing of beer.

A Word from your Cold Weather Friends

Hey there. Remember us? We’re your cold weather friends. Snowblowers, snowmobiles, snow shoes and the like. In other words, we’re your winter survival kit. We stuck with you through ice and snowstorm, sleet and biting cold, and that long, long winter. We were always up for the task on the coldest of days and the deepest of snows. And now we think we need a vacation. We think we’re owed a clean, uncluttered space to call our own. But what do you do? You shoved us in a corner on the side of the garage, piled other things on top of us, covered us with torn tarps, leaving us to battle with the elements. Sun. Bugs. Small furry animals. We don’t like bugs. They are not winter folk. This is not fair people. What did we do to deserve this kind of torture?

Snowblower here can trace his fine lineage back more than a hundred years. Proud inspired Canadians with innovation in their very genes were responsible for creating an automated snow removal system. Those ancestral snowblowers now occupy places of honor and reverence in museums – which are nice, climate controlled buildings. And were it not for snowblowers milk would not be delivered in winter. This would be bad for chocolate chip cookie eating, and … well let’s just not even go there. Plus, you would be stuck in your driveway for six months. If you think about it, snowblowers are the only things standing between you and six months of dark, misery. So, all we are asking is for a little respect here.

Meanwhile, let’s not forget snowmobiles. They don’t go back that far in history, and they don’t really like to discuss the fact that they were originally called motor toboggans. Oh the teasing and name calling they endured in that era. But they are major players in the history of fun. Without snowmobiles, people would have to ski uphill, backwards. Also, without the snowmobile there wouldn’t be cute snowmobiling outfits for men and women. Everyone would be wearing old fashioned military parkas, which are good for the military but not that good for the dating scene. Snowmobiles could be the very essence of survival of the species – so to speak.

Oh yes. We could go on and on about our importance in your lives but we’re not the nagging kind, although, it is said that “Nagging is the repetition of unpalatable truths.” Instead of nagging we’ll just tell you plain and straight. We’ve seen a Sherman Pole Building and it is us. It is us in the sense that such a shelter will keep us safe and leave us to a peaceful summer of slumber and relaxation. And when that summer sun is waning, as it surely will, we’ll be back, with renewed vigor to get you through the winter again. So do us a favor, make that call to Sherman Pole Buildings. And get some bug spray, please.

Metal has Many Faces

The Silver Dome stadium in Detroit is not really made of silver. It’s a Teflon-coated fiberglass. On the other hand, copper roofs have been around since the Duomo in Italy. And you can tell a copper roof by its colors. Metal roofing can be as varied as coffee flavors – almost. Copper, zinc and titanium are used in some specialized cases while aluminum and steel are more commonly used. In agricultural and commercial settings, corrugated steel panels are the preferred choice for barns, sheds and other structures. This roofing material lasts for several decades and it usually has a painted coating to prevent rusting and other damage. All metal roofing can be painted in desired colors.

In residential uses, metal roofing can be made in a variety of styles. A wide variety of coatings, paints, molding and cutting means that a metal roof can look like shingles, slate or tiles. Some metal shingles look almost identical to cedar shakes, while others look like old world Italian tiles or flat clay tiles or with different “rib” styles. There’s a metal roof for every personality. However, there is not necessarily a personality for every roof. Regardless, all metal roof styles are quite durable, able to withstand extreme weather conditions and more.

Keeping Fish and Women Happy

Austin’s giant koi pond was one of the more popular spots on the water garden tour. Cars and people stacked up to the point where passersby with no knowledge or interest in water gardens were stopping by to check out the commotion. Soon enough all were oohing and aahing about the amazing ponds with spectacular specimens of koi that Austin had built next to his deck.

For hours Austin explained the finer points of koi pond logistics. Feeding them carotene will help them to maintain a nice red color. But too much will turn their white spots pink. Someone joked that blueberries would turn their brown eyes blue, which didn’t amuse Austin. He was very serious about raising koi, which is possibly why he was still single.

But things were about to change when she showed up. All of a sudden Austin blocked out all the other people and was just talking to her about his grand pond. He told her about his annual trip to Japan to look for the latest and the best koi. His favorite so far was an artistic white and black fish, Shiro Utsuri, which he had bought for $1,500.00. That much? Wow. And did she know there was once a famous koi in Japan that lived for 226 years? She was impressed.

She casually inquired how Austin kept the koi alive through the winter. Where did he store them and how? This was a lot of stuff. It was obvious that he needed a large space for the filtration system. Not to mention the food and what not.

Austin hesitated. Then he admitted that people were no longer allowed inside his house over the winter because he had ponds taking up the entire basement. That’s not so bad, she told him. Then Austin added that the spare bedroom was another winter destination for koi accessories. Still, she didn’t think that was too bad. Well, actually, it was his whole entire living room and dining room, and he only had a small space in the kitchen and his bedroom for human occupation.

Why would someone want to give up their house to fish in the winter? Had he never considered getting a Sherman Pole Building for his koi? Surely by now he realized the koi needed their own winter home. For a moment, he seemed about to argue against that. But the wheels were turning in his head. He realized that he wouldn’t let this fine species of woman swim out of his life without at least exploring the idea. Hmmm. A Sherman Pole Building. An excellent idea. He smiled. Could they meet and discuss this further?

A Man Cave for Every Kind of Man

At the dawn of human history the man cave was actually a cave where cave men could take a break from the drudgery of hunting, fishing, scaling and skinning to fill the family’s stomach. Rumor has it that the man cave is where fire was actually invented when one cave man’s wife banished him to the cold dungeon. She wanted him to rethink that little grunt about how she was using up all the furs and skins in the name of cave woman fashion.

As humans evolved, the man cave wasn’t really a cave anymore because it had moved into the basement. But it is said that behind every man cave there’s a smart woman eyeing the space for her own uses. After all, women were also evolving at pretty much the same rate and some might say at a faster rate. This was fine with men until it resulted in man cave becoming smaller and smaller until it was just an easy chair and optional headphones in a quiet corner of the family room.

But men soon became discontented with this situation. As far back as 1965, Jimmy Radcliffe wrote the song, “I’m gonna a find a cave.” Just recently some men began a campaign to make it the International Man Cave Anthem. All of which is probably why the man cave is now moving outside the home. And it’s not a tool shed or garage either. To be honest, the man cave is actually a sanctuary that promotes domestic tranquility by freeing up living rooms, basements and garages for other things.

A look around reveals that man caves are now more amazing and diverse in scope than ever before. In some cases it’s a Harley man cave, outfitted with more than just bikes. Man caves can contain anything from hunting and fishing trophies to sports memorabilia, sports equipment such as pool tables and squash courts, and more. There are arcade caves and guitar man caves for jamming. Lately, there’s been a trend in geek man caves for LAN parties among other things.

And of course as the man cave moved out into the yard, Sherman Pole Buildings has been there to encourage domestic tranquility, creating harmonious relationships through separate but equal spaces for men’s things and women’s things. And if women want a cave with a pool table and a Harley, Sherman Pole Buildings is happy to accommodate that as well.

Warehouse

Remember Jack Handy?
