What Is a Pole Barn?

A pole barn is a building constructed using post-frame methods. Large wood posts or engineered laminated columns support the roof and transfer the building’s loads to the ground or an engineered foundation. Roof trusses, wall girts, and roof purlins connect the structure, creating wide, open interiors for storage, garages, agricultural buildings, workshops, and more.

“Pole barn” and “pole building” are common names for this construction method; “post-frame” is the industry term. The name does not limit the building to farm use, and it does not mean the building has no foundation. The foundation, insulation, exterior materials, and interior finishes depend on the building’s intended use and engineered design.

What Is a Barndominium?

A barndominium is a home that combines finished residential living space with the open layout and character of a barn-inspired building. It often includes a garage, workshop, or storage area under the same roof. It is a home planned for residential living, not simply an unfinished barn with a room added inside.

The distinction is how it is built versus how it is used: “pole barn” describes post-frame construction, while “barndominium” describes a home’s style and use.
