What Is a Pole Barn?

A pole barn is a post-frame building. Instead of resting on a continuous poured foundation wall, the structure carries its load on large laminated columns set in the ground or on engineered brackets, spaced several feet apart. Horizontal girts and roof purlins span between those columns, engineered trusses carry the roof, and steel panels close in the walls and roof. Fewer, larger structural members mean clear interior spans without posts in the middle of the floor.

“Pole barn,” “pole building,” and “post-frame building” all describe this same method. The older term comes from the round poles used decades ago; modern buildings use engineered laminated columns, and the industry name is post-frame. A barndominium is a post-frame building finished as a residence, and a machine shed or contractor shop is the same shell configured for equipment.
